Around twenty AMES students from Dandenong and Noble Park recently attended a migrant youth employment forum at Monash University’s Berwick campus.

The students were eager to explore employment opportunities and make contacts with a range of employers – including Coles, Bunnings, Woolworths, Victoria Police, NAB and LINK training – who also attended.

AMES AMEP Education Counsellor Kyaw Soemoe said the students raised several interesting questions with the employers.

“They asked about how to prepare themselves to get a job and they received valuable advice from employers how to construct resumes, cover letters and above all how to market themselves in an interview,” Kyaw said.

“The forum was a great success and I think we need many more similar events for our students,” he said.

“I had a chance to network with service providers and I also invited a few speakers to visit our youth classes and to rerun somewhat similar presentations to our students,” Kyaw said.

One of the forum participants, Hossein said the information that he received from the exercise was very useful.

The event was organised by the South East Local Learning & Employment Network (SELLEN).
