A stunning art exhibition that draws on influences from eastern and western culture and art traditions is set to open in Melbourne.

The exhibition is by Jimmy He, one of Australia’s leading contemporary abstract expressionist oil-painters, living and working in Melbourne,

Titled ‘Revelations in Art: Celebrating 15 Years of Jimmy He’s Creative Vision’, exhibition runs from February 22 until March 4 at the Victorian Artists Society’s Frater, Hammond and McCubbin galleries at 430 Albert Street, East Melbourne.

Before migrating from China to Australia in 1987, Jimmy studied extensively with the famous Chinese oil painter and educator, Professor Chen Junde in Shanghai, who was particularly instrumental to He’s development both as an individual and artist.The evolution of Jimmy He’s oil paintings began with early inspiration originating from Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh.

He also draws inspiration from traditional Chinese art, namely the Yongle Temple in Shanxi Province, notable for its dynasty murals, and the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang City in Gansu Province, also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas.

Jimmy explores the incredibly rich and beautiful culture of China that dates back thousands of years by weaving Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese brushwork into his art and consequently, revealing his deep spiritual concerns and beliefs of the world.

Jimmy’s recent works have advanced from the styles of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning as he unifies the diverse cultures of the East and the West. 

Jimmy He seeks to redefine the genre of abstract expressionism through his art, to always push the boundaries and limits of contemporary art.

Through constant innovation and creativity, it is Jimmy’s firm belief that art should eternally advance and progress to the fullest without restriction.
