A year of conflict in the Middle East – by the numbers

On 7 October last year, 1200 people were killed and around 250 taken hostage in a Hamas terror attack on Israel launched from the Gaza strip.

In response, the Israeli Government led by Benjamin Netanyahu launched a devastating year-long bombing and ground campaign in Gaza.

As a result, around 1.9 million people, representing 90 per cent of the population, have now been forcibly displaced, with many living in refugee camps where they face food shortages and an unsure future.

Figures from the Hamas-run health ministry indicate that almost 42,000 Palestinians have been killed – a quarter of them children.

Another 97,000 people have been injured, according to the health ministry. Attacks on medical facilities have damaged 31 out of 36 of the hospitals that previously operated in Gaza.

The World Health Organisation has reported that 12,000 patients are currently in need of treatment, with many suffering from burns and amputated limbs.

Despite international attempts to end the violence, no ceasefire deal has been successfully negotiated.

During a brief pause in the war last November, the militant group released 110 hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners, but the onslaught soon resumed.

The lack of a ceasefire has seen violence spread to the West Bank and Lebanon amid fears of a full-scale regional was.

In September, over 3,000 people were injured and at least 32 killed when pagers and walkie-talkies linked to the Iran-backed Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, exploded.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire since the attack by Hamas, who are also backed by Iran. But the conflict has escalated in recent weeks.

Top Hezbollah commanders have been killed by Israel, including leader Hassan Nasrallah. In response, Iran has launched 200 missiles at Israel.

Recently, the Israeli military has launched ground incursions into southern Lebanon, while also bombing Gaza and Lebanon.

One report from the NGO ACLED says there have been more than 20,000 strikes, artillery attacks, missiles and explosions in the region between October 7, 2023, and September 27, 2024.

Israel has carried out more than 10,500 of these cross-border attacks through drone or aircraft strikes, artillery and missile attacks, and remote explosions or in Palestinian territory.

Meanwhile, attacks on Israel by foreign actors, including Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and the Houthis number more than 2,000.

Overall, Israel has carried out five times as many armed attacks on Palestinian territory, compared to all attacks on Israel combined.
