Venezuelan rappers take on Trump
Three Venezuelan rappers have created a song called ‘Donaltron’ – a protest piece in which they make their plea to President Donald Trump to not deport them.
The song by a trio called Junior Caldera, Davicito59 and Luxor, has become a viral hit on TikTok.
As migrants in the US push back against President Trump’s crackdown on immigrants in the country without legal status, the song has become a rallying cry.
“Donaltron” is what many Spanish-language speakers call President Donald Trump.
The song lyrics say: “I contribute to this nation. I follow the law,” the song goes. “I work in construction. I don’t deserve to be deported.”
Luxor, a 23-year-old artist who recently arrived in Florida wrote the song.
He told local media it is the product of his side hustle.
Luxor went to wait outside a California Home Depot to find work as a day labourer, but after waiting hours, he had no offers of work.
“I couldn’t find work and I got this idea in my head that I had to create a song,” he said.
Part of the song mirrors his immigration journey.
“God, guide Donald Trump so he doesn’t send us away,” the lyrics say.
They also reference CBP One, a mobile app used by asylum-seekers to schedule entry into the US while they wait for their asylum claim to be heard.
That is how Luxor got into the country, but Trump closed the app on his first day in office.
The music video of the song includes a mock arrest by immigration officers and a man wearing a mask of President Trump dancing.
The lyrics describe some the journeys made by immigrants from Latin America.
“I went through the jungle and was not eaten by jaguars. I fought crocodiles and escaped from the military,” the lyrics say.
Venezuelans have become one of the fastest-growing immigrant groups in the US in recent years.
