AMES students get ready to bowl.

More than 130 participants – most of them AMES students – took part in a gala lawn bowls day this week under the aegis of the CALDplay community sports program run by the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

The event was held on Thursday 12th March at Footscray Park Bowls Club between 10am and 2pm.

The morning session saw Footscray AMES play against Mambourrin and Yarraville Community Centre with Footscray AMES youth taking out the trophy.

In the afternoon session Werribee and St Albans AMES teams got the best of Wyndham Community and Education Centre.

Manager AMES Youth Programs Margot Hennessy thanked the Bulldogs for their support.

“The Gala Day was organised by Kiemi Lai from the Western Bulldogs. It was the culmination of a four week skills workshop program conducted in Term One, 2015. So thanks to Kiemi and her team,” Margot said.

“Next term the students will get involved in AFL skills training workshops.”

Bulldogs Community Engagement manager Kiemi said the participants had enjoyed the day.

“Over three training sessions in recent weeks, we’ve had 20 students from St Albans AMES at St Albans Bowls Club, 30 from Footscray AMES at Footscray Park Bowls Club and 40 from Werribee AMES at Werribee Bowls Club,” Kiemi said.

“Everyone attended regularly and all had a great time but I doubt many, if any, had played or seen lawn bowls before,” she said.
