FARAWAY corners of this wide brown land are not unfamiliar to 12-year-old Maryam Sathat Sobhani. She has been detained on Christmas Island, on Manus Island and in Darwin after she fled Iran with her parents two years ago. Today the family is in the northern NSW town of Gunn­edah, on the sweeping Liverpool Plains, so that Maryam, who began learning English only after arriving in Australia, can accept first prize in the assisted learning category of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition.
